“How much will it cost to fix?” is the first thing most people ask, and the honest answer is that it depends on what the damage actually is. A scuffed bumper corner and a creased rear door are very different jobs, even though both get described as a bit of paint damage over the phone. Here is what actually moves the price on a car paint repair, using recent jobs from around Brisbane as the examples.
How big the damage is, and how deep it goes
Surface scuffs that have not broken through the paint are the cheapest thing to fix. Once the damage goes through the colour into the primer or the bare plastic underneath, the repair needs filling, priming and respraying, which takes longer. A stone chip on a guard is a small job. A scrape running along a bumper corner is a bigger one.
Whether it is a plastic bumper or a metal panel
Bumpers are plastic and they flex, so scuffs and scrapes usually sand back and respray without much drama. Metal panels like doors, guards and quarter panels behave differently. If a panel has been pushed in, the dent has to come out and the surface has to be made flat again before any paint goes near it. That panel work is what separates a quick repair from a longer one.

Plenty of jobs are both at once. A car park knock leaves a dent and takes the paint off at the same time. The dent gets worked out first, then the area is filled where it needs it, primed and painted. That is two stages instead of one, so it costs more than paint on its own.
The colour, and how far it has to blend
Solid colours are the most straightforward to match. Metallics and pearls carry flake that has to be sprayed and blended so the repair does not sit as a patch against the rest of the car. Paint is mixed to the car’s factory colour code, then blended into the surrounding panel. The further that blend has to run, the more paint and time the job takes.
How many panels are involved
A single bumper corner is one price. Damage that runs across two panels is another, because both have to be prepped and blended together so the finish carries across evenly. The car below took a hit that creased the rear door and carried on into the quarter panel, so both were straightened and painted as one repair.
