A cracked or split bumper usually gets one of two answers over the phone. Either it is a repair, or the whole bar comes off and a new one goes on. Which one you are looking at comes down to a few things that are easy to check once someone can actually see the damage. Here is how that call gets made, using recent jobs from around Brisbane as the examples.
Plastic bumpers are built to flex, which is why they repair well
Almost every modern bumper is a plastic cover sitting over a reinforcement bar, and the plastic is chosen because it gives. That is the same reason a lot of bumper damage turns out better than it first looks. A corner that has been pushed in can often be worked back to its original shape and refinished. Cracks follow similar logic. Plastic can be welded and reinforced from behind, then filled, primed and painted on the side you see.
When a cracked bumper can be repaired
A crack that runs a short distance, has clean edges and still has all of its material is a straightforward repair. So is a split at a mounting point, as long as the tab it broke away from is still there or can be rebuilt. The test is whether there is enough sound plastic either side of the crack to bond to. Where there is, the repair holds, and once the colour is matched you will struggle to find it.
When a cracked bumper needs replacing instead
Some damage is past repairing, and it is better to hear that early. A bumper that has shattered into separate pieces, one that has gone brittle and is crumbling along the edges, or one with a large section missing does not leave enough material to work with. The other case is damage that has carried through to the reinforcement bar or the mounting brackets behind the cover, because tidying up the outside would leave a structural problem underneath it. Either of those gets flagged before any work starts.
Dents and scuffs that look worse than they are
The grey SUV below took a hit on the front corner hard enough to crease the plastic in two directions. That is the sort of damage most people assume means a new bumper. It came back into shape and was refinished in the car’s own grey.
Scuffing is the more common version of the same thing. The silver sedan below had been scraped along the front corner and back through the paint. It was sanded, colour matched to the factory code and blended out on site.
What a mobile bumper repair involves on site
The work is the same work a workshop does, carried out where the car is parked. The area is cleaned and sanded back, any cracking is welded and reinforced from behind, then the surface is filled and made flat and primed. Paint is mixed to the car’s own factory colour code and blended into the surrounding panel so the repair sits evenly against the rest of the car, and clear coat goes over the top.
How long a bumper repair takes
On the two bumper jobs pictured above, the before and after photos were taken a bit over two hours apart on the same morning. That is the timestamps on Alex’s photos rather than a quoted turnaround, and every job is different, but it gives you the shape of it. The car stays where it is the whole time, so there is no drop off and no pickup to organise.
When the damage runs past the bumper
Sometimes the bumper is only part of it. The CR-V below was scraped across the rear door and on into the quarter panel, so the repair had to carry across the join between the two.
Both panels were prepped and painted together, because stopping at the shut line and painting only one leaves an edge you can pick, particularly in white. It is worth mentioning when you send a photo through. Damage crossing two panels is a different job to a single bumper corner and gets priced as one.
