How Long Does a Bumper Repair Take? Three Brisbane Jobs, Timed

How long a bumper repair takes is usually the second question people ask, right after the price. The honest answer depends on the damage, so here are three jobs from the last week and how long each one took.

A scuffed bumper lip: under an hour

The white Toyota above had a black scuff along the lower lip of its front bumper, low down and close to the wheel. It was done in about 40 minutes, right where the car was parked. Light scuffing on the surface of a bumper is the quickest kind of job there is, and it is also the most common.

A scraped bumper corner on a 4WD: about an hour and a half

The black 4WD below had scrape marks through the front bumper corner, just under the fog light. Black is the least forgiving colour for this, because any mark shows up in the reflection. That one took about an hour and a half, done in the car park where it was parked.

A scraped rear quarter panel with rust starting: about two hours

This one is not a bumper, but it is the same kind of damage on a bigger panel. The grey Mazda below had been scraped along the rear wheel arch, and where the scrape went through to bare metal at the edge of the arch, rust had started to come through. That took about two hours.

What makes a bumper repair take longer

The time grows with how much of the panel has to be worked and painted. A mark on the surface of a bumper lip is a small area. A corner with scrapes across a curve covers more of the bumper and has to blend into the panel around it. Bare metal with rust on it has to be dealt with before any paint goes on, otherwise the rust carries on underneath the new paint. Cracks that need plastic welding from behind, and damage that runs across two panels, add time on top of that.

Why a mobile bumper repair saves the most time

For most people the hours that matter are their own. A mobile repair is done where the car already is, at home or in the work car park, so there is no drop off, no lift back, and no days without the car while it waits in a workshop queue.
